Listening to ravvus live feels like being burned alive (and loving it)

Enter Richmond’s The Camel on most any night of the week and you’ll encounter a bouquet of black-on-black-clad locals nestled in the blocked-in front patio smoking cigs and peeping vibes.

Many times the contrast between audience and bands is indistinguishable, But, on this particular summer night, one act leveled an immolative reckoning upon the crowd that evoked an unmistakable aura of unified awe: Ravvus is truly “something else.”

What starts as a slow, dirge-like incantation becomes a raucous ride. The top layer of my skin feels like it’s begging to fly loose under the bloom of fabric-of-the-universe-ripping riffs and firecracker rhythm — vocals both lightening rod and lightening..

The care-laden cacophony rattles my brain and i’m snapping shots in a trace … trusting the thrum that carries me through to the other side of the performance, later editing at home and sighing with wonder at the evidence:

“Wow. that really did just happen.”.
